Statistically, the number of abortions remains the same when abortion is legal and when it's not. But instead of those abortions being performed in a medical facility, they are performed in homes and in otherwise completely unsanitary and unsafe environments. In countries where abortion is illegal, the number one cause of womens' death is from abortions performed on them illegally. Making abortions illegal will not make them less frequent. It will only make them more deadly.

Now that we have that out of the way, how can we make them less frequent without endangering womens' lives by making them illegal?

I would start with a much better sex education. The abstinence-only approach has been proven time and time again to be an ineffective approach to sex education.

What do you think we could do?

I think the medical community needs to develop some serious birth control for MEN!

It is time that they were brought into the birth control conversation as equally responsible parties and not the fellows who think a woman's providing a condom is the only birth control available to them.

I wonder about those sleazeballs who would just tell women they were on the male version of the pill just to get them to sleep with him without making him where a condom. No doubt it would work in some cases.

I think that the person that is wanting to have the abortion should have to watch a video of one being done and have to take several class. That is unreal I could never do it to a unborn child no matter what the cause is. There is always someone out there in the world that would love to care for that child that can not have one!

I agree, maybe we should make men have something like a vasectomy when they are little and then once they are old enough to start being responsible to think about kids they can have it reversed?? It would stop alot of unwanted pregnancies.

That's an interesting idea, one I can see actually being implemented in China or some such place Laughing out loud

Seriously though, if vasectomies were easily reversible it might be a good idea, but I think people would get up into a heave ho about their "rights" or something if something like this were actually suggested within the government. There was a politician who proposed voluntary sterilization for low income people through a government program, and people got all upset over that.

It would be nice to reduce so many unwanted pregnancies though. Can you imagine if *only* people who went to such a conscious effort to regain their fertility were having kids? It would be a very different society indeed.

I would think most men (like me) would very much like to keep their balls and stick in their proper places. Plus consider it; something like that had been started earlier probably at least 1/2 of us would not be here. More if you go far enough up the family tree. And jdh2009, I very much agree with you. I can't imagine allowing someone (if I were a woman and pregnant) to kill my child that would someday grow up to be just like us and have a life of his/her own. Often lately I've been thinking technology has given us more bad things than good.
