Art and the average person,,,,
I have noticed that few adults in the USA actually have personal artwork on display in their homes. Decor is purchased from large companies.
This seems contrary to what is seen in tribal cultures where people create their own pots, baskets and household decor. They don't have to attend art schools to feel that these personal expressions are valid, and they aren't considered "lazy" or unproductive when spending time creating beauty.
Since the USA seems to be the country with the highest incidence of mental illness, do you think our society is headed in the wrong direction by eliminating art classes and music classes in favor of making good workers and consumers?
Are we being stripped of our humanity?
Is the lack of personal artwork in homes a sign that something is terribly wrong?
Art and music are both ways in which we, as individuals can express ourselves. I would not go as far as to say that any lack of original and personal artwork in the home is a sign of problems, but rather just a sign of the times.
Unfortunately we are all too busy to be making our own pieces of art.
i love doing crafts, way back when I'm still studying I had subject which taught us about handicrafts. I find my time well spent for i love what I'm doing and it became part of my leisure time.
There is a reason why European nobility was trained in arts: music, dancing, singing, drawing, poetry, and crafts like embroidery (ladies). It is very enriching and healthy for a person to be able to appreciate and create art. They may not be a great artist, but still they can partake of it. It is a blessing.
I wish the US took the arts more seriously. I don't see huge art shows or anything anymore. I know there's a couple local ones where there's only about 5 things on display, and a fair in New York outside one art museum... and I think that's it.
Art has such a rich history, and the US just isn't aknowledging it anymore. I wish they would though.
Definitely we need to promote more of self-created artifacts. It would actually be beneficial for overall mental development.
I have a few pieces of artwork around my house, but if I get artwork to display it has to be an original one without any other copies.

Is the USA the country with the highest rate of mental illness? I've never heard that opinion before. I would think there would be plenty of other candidates, such as countries with high poverty rates where stress and poor nutrition lead to violence, and art is definitely low on the priority list.
Does a lack of art in and of itself indicate something being wrong? Not sure. Historically, a lack of art is associated with a general decline in standards of living, such as "The Dark Ages". It's usually not a good thing when art starts disappearing.
Art really doesn't need to be in a frame for it to be beautiful though. A friend of mine put all kinds of things on her walls, and it looked great. She had fans, and tapestries, she did a great job. It's amazing the difference you can make to the look of your home just by hanging a beautifully designed cloth on the wall.
